Preferred Game: Chess, Go, Stratego, and of course Poker
Angel is no stranger to the poker scene. Topping the Mexican All-Time Money List at third overall, he has befriended numerous well-known poker players such as Mayu Roca, JC Alvarado, Matias Gebrenja, and Nacho Barberom just to name a few. Guillen enjoys watching the young guns in poker because he can tell that most of them have great instincts. As a poker fan, he believes it’s always fun to watch how the younger poker players play who often don’t take the optimal lines and rather the exploitative ones because it increases variance while being entertaining.
To this day, Guillen is still learning about different styles of poker. In his opinion, there is no such thing as the best poker player and that there are many things to learn from the top players. Guillen strongly believes that “you got to be observant and humble to recognize strengths and weaknesses, not only from other players, but most importantly from yourself.”
More about Angel Guillen
For Guillen, poker is a big passion of his for reasons that could be obvious for most poker players – the mental aspect, competition (first and foremost against yourself), money, freedom and traveling. All those are truthful to who he is. However, there are other reasons that are not as subtle. Poker requires a lot of training both on and off the felt. Something that he really finds valuable is the level of intuition you can acquire and apply for most aspects of life. Guillen feels like he is really in tune with the mental well-being, as he learns more about himself everyday.
When it comes to life outside of poker, Guillen enjoys many hobbies such as tennis, chess, and also enjoys to read and write about science. His favor writers are Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Carlos Fuentes. His favorite city to visit is Melbourne, and loves to attend the Australian Tennis Open which happens to coincide with the Aussie Millions poker tournament.
